Working on the Canvas and Layers
Use the canvas and Layers panel together so large email documents stay easy to edit and troubleshoot.
The fastest Template Studio workflow uses both the canvas and the Layers panel. The canvas is best for visual placement. The Layers panel is best for structure, selection, and issue-driven navigation.
Select blocks on the canvas
Click a block directly on the canvas when you want to edit the visible section in context.
Selection matters because Template Studio changes the right-side controls based on what is currently selected. When a block is selected, the right panel shifts from general library tabs into settings for that specific block.
Add and move content
Use the Blocks tab to drag new blocks into the document.
After a block is in the document, you can reposition it visually or reorder it through the document structure. This is especially useful for long emails where dragging inside the canvas alone becomes slower.
Use the Layers panel for structure
The Layers panel shows the current document tree, including nested sections and child blocks.
Use it when you need to:
- jump to a block that is hard to select on the canvas
- understand how a section is nested
- collapse parts of the tree while you focus on one area
- confirm whether repeated structures are linked through blueprint relationships
For larger templates, the Layers panel is usually the fastest way to stay oriented.
Filter warnings and errors
The Layers panel includes quick filters for warnings and errors.
Turn those filters on when you want to narrow the document tree down to problem areas before previewing or publishing. This is useful when a long template has several nested sections and only a small number of them need attention.
Watch for unpublished changes
Template Studio keeps track of unpublished changes while you work.
Treat that state seriously before importing a file, closing the editor, or switching to a different record. If the current document has diverged from the last published version, replacing it can overwrite work you have not committed yet.
Keyboard and workflow tips
- Use
Escapeto clear the current selection. - If preview is open,
Escapecloses it first. - Use undo and redo from the toolbar when restructuring blocks quickly.
- Open change history from the toolbar dropdown when you need more context on recent edits.
Best practices
- Keep the Layers panel open for long documents.
- Use issue filters before publish instead of scanning the whole email manually.
- Make structural moves in the Layers panel when the canvas becomes crowded.
- Publish intentionally after large rounds of changes so the saved baseline stays current.
